『風がページを、、、、　池澤夏樹の読書日記』を読んでいたら、艶子おばさんの会話に頻繁に出てきた謝花昇についての本が紹介されていた。伊佐眞一編・解説の『謝花昇集』。きっと彼女も読んだ本。

　謝花昇の名を一般の日本人はまず知らないだろうが、沖縄では広く知られた名前である。明治期日本の民権運動は地方の見識ある人々によって下から支えられる形で進められた。謝花もその一人である。彼は「沖縄ではじめての農民を主体とした政治結社を組織し、その政策を県政に反映しようとし」（『高等学校　琉球・沖縄史』沖縄歴史研究会）て、旧勢力の抵抗にあい、最後は狂死した。―――『風がページを、、、、　池澤夏樹の読書日記』より
　
　先日亡くなった艶子おばさんは父と母の古い友人であり、わたしにとっても身近な人だった。最近では、栄町市場の同じ住人としてよく話をした。彼女は昔から市場で南米料理の店を営んでいたのだ。

　艶子おばさんが生きていたら、わたしは間違いなくこの本を勧める。彼女は寝る間も惜しんで読み終え、小書店を訪ねてくるに違いない。いつものように店先に座り、ふたりでこの本について語り合う。彼女はわたしにきっとこう言う。
「とても面白かった！でも、面白い書評集の欠点って、まだ読んだことのない本を読んだ気になってしまうことよね。ふふ。でも、それでは駄目ね。さぁ、次はどの本がおすすめ？」
　読書家の艶子おばさんは小書店で本をたくさん買っては、すごいスピードで読む。面白かったと満足するときのほうが多かったけれど、気に入らなかったときは「つまらない」とばっさり。本だけじゃなく、人の好き嫌いもはっきりしていた。金や権力を好む人を厳しく批判する。でも、弱い人や苦しんでいる人にはどこまでも優しかった。「強き者を挫き、弱き者を助ける」を地で行った人。
　彼女の葬儀はとても簡素だった。葬儀場で行われた通夜と出棺前の別れの時間。亡くなったことは身内と親しい友人だけにしか知らされなかったから、出席者も少なかった。その場にいた全員が彼女を失ったことに打ちひしがれながら、どうか安らかにと願った。静かで厳かな空間に強い連帯感のようなものがあった。
　後日、彼女を偲ぶ会もひっそりと行われた。参加者全員が艶子おばさんの思い出を話して、わたしは知らなかった彼女の新しい一面を知ることができた。
　キューバと関係の深かった彼女はカストロの息子やゲバラの娘とも仲が良かったとか、アルゼンチンの国営放送で日本語のアナウンサーをしていたとか、中学生のときアメリカから派遣されたシスターの手伝いをしていて、実はシスターを志していた、など。
　会を終えたとき、艶子おばさんの人物像はわたしが知っていた彼女よりももっと深く、濃いものとなって残った。
　
　艶子おばさんにはもう会えない。でも、わたしの心の中には彼女がいる。触れることはできないけれど、確かに存在している。
　できるだけ多くの人に彼女のことを聞きたい。できるだけ多く彼女が読んだ本を読みたい。それが、わたしの中の彼女をどんどん蘇らせる。
「ちょっとだけって言ったのに、またこんなに長居しちゃったわね」
　椅子から立ち上がった彼女は、小さく手を振って小書店を出ていく。

【本日の栄町市場】

　今、目の前で向いの金城さんと仲介業者のウラさんが睡眠について語っている。
「理想は8時間ぐっすりさー。でも、年を取ったらそんなには寝られない。それでも8時間って言われたらストレス溜まるよー。わたしは寝られる時に寝れって思う」
「でも、寝なすぎても病気になるリスクが高まるそうだ。だから、無理にでも寝た方がいい」
　段々ヒートアップしてくるふたり。そうか、年を重ねると寝れなくなることがあるというのは本当なんだな。
　この会話の発端は、隣のかばん店のJさんだ。Jさんは本当によく眠る。店番をしながら、弁当を食べながら。お客さんが来ても起きないんだから、すごい。
　今日のJさんは特に寝ている時間が多いねー、とみんなで話しているうちに、それぞれの睡眠について語りだしてヒートアップしているってわけ。
　Jさんが両腕を空高く伸ばしながらスッキリした顔でこちらにやってくる。
「ふぁー、よく寝ていた。あーしぇ、弁当落としそうになったよー」
　80歳を過ぎても元気なJさん。噂によると何十年も前から容姿が変わっていないらしい。やっぱり、いっぱい寝るって体にも美容にもいいんだ。ね、金城さん。
「そうだねー。Jさんは昔からよく寝るって有名人よー。今も昔と同じように寝れるんだからすごいよ」
　みんなによく寝ることを褒められたJさんは少し照れながら、またあくびをした。
