『小説の羅針盤』

　洒落たハンチング帽を被り、ゆっくり杖をついて歩く。昔から落ち着きがなく走り回るわたしを「危険人物」と呼び、心配そうに見ている。祖父の趣味は骨董だったから、いつわたしが突っ込んで壊さないか心配だったのだろう。
　そんな出来事を鮮明に思い出せる。祖父が亡くなったのは、わたしが三歳のときなのでほとんど記憶はないはずだが、母から祖父母（母からしたら義父母）の話をよく聞かされていたし、伯父が書いた祖父についての本を何度も読んでいたから。本を読む度に記憶の中の彼の輪郭が濃くなっていく。自由と平和を愛する成熟した知識人。
　明治、大正、昭和を生きた祖父は図書館司書、旧制中学の講師などを経て、市長、立法院議員など、様々な職に就いていた。二期目の立法院議員選挙では情勢が自分に不利と見て、急遽、祖母を代わりに立候補させるなど、機転が利いて柔軟な人だったようだ。そして、祖母は沖縄で初の女性立法院議員になった。
　戦時中、十・十空襲で家を焼かれた祖父は、母親と妻、生後六カ月の息子を連れて熊本へ疎開する。既に四十五歳になっていたので兵役は免れていた。熊本には多くの沖縄人疎開者が住んでいて、熊本県人会の会長を任された祖父は戦後すぐに、沖縄人の帰還のために奔走する。
　戦後も疎開した沖縄人の苦難は続き、かといって、故郷沖縄は破壊され尽くされて無惨な形になっていた。それでも、故郷沖縄への想いは募り、帰還運動を続けた。一九四六年、沖縄人の帰還が許可され祖父は大変喜んだという。

　伯父が書いた本、『〈ウチナー〉見果てぬ夢　―宮里栄輝とその時代―』に、とても好きなエピソードがある。
　校長はじめ職員もみな国民服を着けて国民帽をかぶって学校に行きよったですがね。私は普通の背広で鳥打帽をかぶって行きよったですよ。―――『〈ウチナー〉見果てぬ夢　―宮里栄輝とその時代―』より
　戦時色が強くなっていくに従い、県庁職員や学校の教師たちも国民服と国民帽に一変させられる時代、祖父は普段と同じであることにこだわった。
　
　明治の男が頑固なのは、自分の祖父などでよく知っている。頑固というのは、生活を律する基準を自分で勝手に作って決してそれを枉げない姿勢のことである。言ってみれば、個人主義者なのだ。近代の日本が個人というものを社会の軛から解放しようと努力し、文学にとってはそれこそが最大のテーマであったことを考えると、明治の男が個人主義者であったというのはどこかアナクロニズムに思われておかしい。大正、昭和生まれは社会の圧力に屈しやすく、またそのことについてメソメソと泣き言を言うのが癖になっていたが、明治男は最初から最後まで毅然としていた。後の世代に彼らのような見識と頑固が備わっていればこの国はもう少しうまく運営できたのではないか。少なくとも今見るような経済一点張りの恥ずかしいことにはなっていなかっただろう。―――『小説の羅針盤』より

『小説の羅針盤』には著者が尊敬する十五名の文学者が方角のように羅針盤に並ぶ。評論ではなく、偏愛の本。著者の作家たちへの愛情が静かに語られる。知らない作家との出会いもあって、心がときめく。
　内田百閒の章では、全然タイプの違う人間であるのに生きる姿勢が共通しているようで、祖父を思い出した。

　立身出世を裏返した生きかた、国家の大義名分のためでなく日々の生活のための自分の人生だという彼の確信に勇気づけられた者は少なくなかったのではないか。大空襲の中を逃げまどいながら、彼は被害者に徹することでこの戦争を批判した。戦争に対する一つの姿勢を示した。だから『東京焼尽』は貴重なのである。―――『小説の羅針盤』より

　国中が軍国主義に染められていく中で個人を大切に生きる。それが、なぜか今のわたしを奮い立たせる。わたしの場合、本を読むことは歓びであり、学びでもあるが、何より自分を鼓舞するものかもしれない。著者のように好きな本を自分の周りに並べて、自由で優しい世界へ進めればいい。
　
　母は義父母をとても尊敬していて、よく思い出話や祖父の書いたものを話してくれた。いよいよ沖縄へ帰還するときの文章は傑作だと、伯父の本にも紹介されていた。

　帰還の日は遂に来た。
　窮乏と孤独に明け暮れた二年をただ帰郷に望みをつないで生き抜いて来た。その帰郷の日が遂に来た。
　胡馬は北風にいななき越鳥は南枝に巣喰うという。郷土を懐うは人間の至情である。特に沖縄人は故郷に対する愛着が非常に強い。
　四百数十年前、マラッカに貿易した琉球人を評して、誠実で各国の人々と親和して実に敬愛すべき民族であるが、故郷を思う念が強く長く母国を離れることを欲しない、ということがポルトガル人アルブケルケの伝記の中に見えている。
　沖縄の自然と人文が沖縄人をそうさしたであろう。沖縄〔人〕は国際人的性格を多分に持っている半面、懐郷的感情が余程強い。我々が機会ある毎に帰還の可能を力説して同胞を激励し、又当局に其促進方を要望した真意もまた其処にある。暗澹たる日本の現在及び将来を想う時、在日沖縄人、分けても九州引揚げ沖縄人救済は帰還以外に途はない、というのが我等の信念でもあるからである。

　昼は肝（チム）通い夜は夢通い、片時も忘れ得ない故里ではあるが、その変貌とみじめさに一時心を傷めること必定であろうが、大地は微笑み郷党は随喜の涙を以て我々を迎えてくれるであろう。
　自由と平和と文化と道義を愛する沖縄人よ。

【本日の栄町市場】

　市場にある「ごはんとお酒　給食当番」の定食はわたしにとって、ご褒美だ。店で高い本が売れたときや、売上げのよい日にランチする店。
　白身魚のガーリックバター定食とチキン南蛮定食が好きで、どちらにするか悩むのだけど、加えて旬の生サンマ炭火焼定食や牡蠣フライ定食など限定定食としてメニューに並ぶものだから、うーん、と決められない。でも、その悩んでいる時間も楽しいんだけど。
　わたしは揚げ物を食べると必ず胃もたれを起こすのだが、給食当番の定食はものすごいボリュームなのに少しも胃がもたれない。油をこまめに替えているんだろうなぁ。ソースも美味しくて、小鉢もお汁もお出汁が美味しくて、丁寧な味付けなのだ。そう、わたしは、「ごはんとお酒　給食当番」のファンなのです。
　そんな大好きなお店が今月で閉まるという。店のお姉さんから聞いたときは、いやー！と思わず大声で嘆いてしまった。悲しい。「すごく美味しくて、全部食べたかったのに。残念だ、、、」
　するとお姉さんがニコニコと笑う。
「なんか、そばを食べたいっていう人が多くて。だから、来月からはそば屋になります！」
　
　ということで、来月から「ごはんとお酒　給食当番」は｢沖縄そば専門店　ちゃるそば｣に生まれ変わるそうです！
　定食が食べられなくなるのは寂しいけど、こんなに美味しい料理をつくるご主人なので沖縄そばも絶対美味しいだろうなぁ、と楽しみがまた一つ増えたのでした。
