『キップをなくして』

「ピアスの穴を開けたい」と急に言い出した深沢に、たまたま居合わせた幼馴染が、「だー、開けよう」と素早く安全ピンで耳に穴を開けた。あまりに迷いがなくて手早かったものだから、開けられた本人も最初はびっくりしていたけど、痛くない！と小さく喜んだ。高校生になっても子供みたいな顔で笑うなぁ。
　高校生になった深沢は何かと忙しくなったようで以前より会う機会が減ったけど、たまにふらりと家に遊びに来ては夕食を食べて、夜遅くまでお喋りをしたり映画を観たりして帰っていく。
　初めて会ったのは、私が大学生で彼が13歳のとき。BMXという自転車競技の選手をしていたわたしの恋人が、同じくBMXの練習していた彼を可愛がっていたから。
　東京でわたしと恋人が暮らす家と彼の家が近かったこともあり、練習が終わったあとによく夕食を食べに来た。
　幼稚舎から名門大学の付属学校に通い、父親も祖父も同じ学校の出身。さりげなく、でも誇らしげに話す姿は大人ぶっていて生意気な都会の子供だった。裕福で与えられたものを隅々まで享受している、幸運を屈託なくひけらかす男の子。わたしたちには、その全部が子供らしく思えて可愛かった。
　幼稚舎から大学までエレベーター式に進学して、卒業すれば好きな仕事に就職し順風満帆に生きていくだろうと思っていた彼の人生は、予想に反して年を重ねるごとに厳しくなっていった。以前みたいに気楽で陽気な顔には影が射しはじめた。稀に家族の話をしても、明るい話題は一つもなかった。「おじいちゃんの家に引っ越した」「母親がお酒ばかり飲んでいて嫌だ」「姉ちゃんは大学に進学しないかもしれない」「父親は、、、わかんないっす」
　まだ少年だった彼には辛い日々だったと思う。恋人が深沢と最初に会ったとき、彼はまだ小学生だった。深沢の父親は体の弱い彼を心配していたけれど、好きなスポーツを見つけたと喜び、いつも公園や大会に付き添っていたそうだ。
　そんな少年だった彼の心が傷つきながら自立していくにつれ、彼の家族はどんどんバラバラになっていくように見えた。
　高校で問題を起こしたり、困難な出来事があったり。客観的に見たら多くの問題を持つ青年だった。いや、わたしにはまだ少年に見えた。いつものように照れ笑いを浮かべて話す内容がどんどんハードになり、わたしたちが戸惑うこともあった。でも、食事をしたり、オセロやトランプをする姿は昔と変わらない、生意気で可愛い男の子のまま。

『キップをなくして』。
　キップをなくした小学生のイタルは駅から出られなくなってしまう。「キップをなくしたら、駅から出られないんだよ」と話す女の子に連れられ、同じようにキップをなくした子供たちと東京駅の地下で暮らすことになったイタル。駅の子として大切な仕事をする中で仲間と居場所を得ていく。
　やがて、フクシマケンという中学生がやって来て、キップをなくしても精算窓口でキップをなくしましたと言えば、外に出られると皆に告げる。駅をいつでも出られると知り、揺らぐイタルと仲間たち。彼らは駅を出て家に帰るのだろうか？それとも、駅の子として暮らしていくのか。

　イタルは自分が家に帰るところを想像した。マンションの玄関を入って、エレベーターに乗って、4のボタンを押して、外廊下を歩き、家のドアをカギで開けて、中に入る。ダイニングを抜けて自分の部屋。六時になったらママが帰ってくる。パパはどうせ夜ずっと遅く。あの家、あの部屋。
　でも今、自分はここにいる。この仲間たちと暮らしている。ここを出たら家に帰れる。ここを出たら家に帰るしかない。キップをなくしたから、ここにいるしかないと思っていた。でも帰れる。
　じゃあ帰るか？
　帰るか？
　帰らない。―――『キップをなくして』より

　駅の子供たちは、どうして選ばれたのだろう？他にもキップをなくした子供たちは大勢いたはずなのに。駅の子供たちを親は探しに来なかったし、子供たちも家に帰らず仲間たちと上手く過ごしていた。日常のことを宙ぶらりんにして彼らは過ごしていた。
　駅の子供たちは家族や家、学校での問題を抱えていたから、問題に一歩踏み出す決心がつくまで駅の子供になったんじゃないか。
　深沢も駅の子供に似ていた。
　家があるのに帰りたくなくて、家族がいるのに会いたくない。
　彼の両親にとっても苦しく厳しい日々で、彼のことを十分にケアできる余裕がなかったのだと思う。
　子供にはどうすることもできないこと。親も自分の人生を一生懸命生きているし、やがて、子供も親と離れて自分の人生を生きなければいけない。同じ人生を歩むことはできないから。子供だった彼は苦しかっただろうけど、必死にもがいて青年になった。
　わたしたちの家は『キップをなくして』の駅のように子供だった深沢を厳しく優しく見守る場所ではなかったけれど、少しでも逃げ場になっていたらよかったと思う。
　今、彼は結婚して家を建てて、仕事をしている。仕事に満足しているわけではないというのも生意気な彼らしいな。まだ若いし、納得のいく仕事もいずれはできるはず。
　とにかく、彼が自分の人生を見つけて生きていることがわたしは嬉しかった。
　自分の人生に折り合いをつけながら、昔とおんなじ照れ笑いをして近況を話す彼を見て、与えられることだけがよい人生じゃないと思った。
　家に帰らずに葛藤して迷子になっていた日々が、彼の人生に深みを与えているとわかったから。

【本日の栄町市場】

定食屋の「給食当番」が、「ちゃるそば」という沖縄そば専門店としてリニューアルオープンした。
聞けば、お客さんから沖縄そばはないの？というリクエストが多かったのだそう。ならば、沖縄そば専門店にしよう！ということだったらしい。
ご主人は若いときから日本料理店で修行を積んでいたそうで、彼を見るたび、包丁一本～さらしに巻いて～という曲が頭の中で流れてくる。「ザ・硬派な板前」という感じ。かっこいいのだ。
無口なのかな？と思ったけれど、話すとそんなことなくて、気遣いが素晴らしく優しい人だ。どんなに混んでいても冷静に細やかに接客してくれる。
沖縄そばの出汁も繊細で、きっと、ご主人の性格が出ているのだと思う。
わたしが一番好きなのは、軟骨ソーキそば。柔らかなソーキが口の中で溶けていく。
今日のランチに食べたのに、また食べたくなってきた、、、
