『きみが住む星』

　子供たちが公園へ出掛けたから家の中が急に静かになった。
「少し歌ってもいい？」とリタがギターとウクレレを持ってリビングにやってきた。彼女が座った後ろには大きな窓があって、外からの光が眩しい。カーテンを閉める？とわたしが聞くと、ううん、そのままがいいわと言ってギターをつま弾き、彼女は歌い始めた。歌声は透き通っていて、限りなく優しかった。
　慌ただしく昼食の準備をしていたけれど、彼女の歌声を逃すのがもったいなくて手を止めた。
　
「音楽家の夫婦とその子供たちを綾羽さんの家に泊めてくれませんか？」
知り合いの女性から連絡が来たとき、迷うことなく承諾した。普段だと慎重になるような話だけれど、信用できる知人だったし、小さな子供が二人というのも楽しそう。何より、音楽家との生活は魅力的だと思った。
　数日後、たくさんの荷物と小さな子供二人を連れて音楽家たちはやってきた。車内は荷物で埋まり、その隙間にやっと人が入る。
　彼らは、肉を食べられなかったり（沖縄で豚肉を食べられないことが、こんなにも大変だとは）、乳製品が苦手であったり。でも、制約が多い分、普段つくらない食事を作って料理のレパートリーが増えたし、豆腐の新しい食べ方を二つも発見した。
　リタの故郷の話を聞くのも楽しかった。運河があって、夏はミュージックフェスティバルが多いから忙しい。オーブン料理が美味しくて、わたしも得意なの。でも冬は寒くてとても辛い。
　彼女の話を聞きながら、自分の家に新しい生活が入ってきたことに胸が躍った。知らなかった生活、行ったことのない国。

　考えてみて。きみ一人を地面の上に立たせて、足を地面がしっかり支え、風が髪の毛の間を吹きぬけ、明るい日差しがきみの顔を照らすために、いったいどれだけの時間と偶然が必要だったか。地球がもう少し冷たくても、あとわずか乾いていても、紫外線がもうちょっと強くても、きみはいなかった。何かが少し変わっただけで、きみが見上げる白樺の葉は繁っていなかっただろうし、きみが食べるオレンジも実をつけなかった。雪が降る光景をきみは見ることはなく、ぼくがきみの髪に触れることもなかった。大好きなその髪。かぎりなくたくさんの条件をひとつ残らずクリアして、そしてきみがこの星に住むことになった。
　その星のあちらこちらをぼくは見にゆくのだと思った。行く先々でぼくは風景や人々の中にきみのおもかげを見るだろう。それをきみに報告するだろう。そういう形で、ぼくはきみへの思いを伝える。きみはぼくの目を経由した自画像をたくさん受け取るだろう。旅をしているのが自分であり、見られている風景が自分であり、この星全体が自分なのだと知るだろう。―――『きみが住む星』

　恋人へ宛てた手紙と写真たち。世界を切り取った写真と行く先々から送られた手紙の美しさは何度読んでも色褪せない。旅を続け、異国の風景に恋人の面影を見る。とてもロマンティックな本。
　もしも、わたしが手紙を受け取った恋人ならば、毎日持ち歩いて眺めるだろうから手紙はボロボロになって写真はすぐに擦り切れてしまう。それでも、あなたが風景にわたしを見るように、わたしは手紙の中の風景にあなたを見るのだろう。ロマンティック。
　昔から大切な友人や恋人、家族ができたら、『きみが住む星』を美しく包んで贈ることにしている。今、気がついた。わたしは彼らにラブレターを送っていたんだ。美しい風景を一緒に見たいのだと。結構、大胆な告白をしていたんだ。
　
　リタのライブの夜。客の中には赤ん坊もいた。彼女は「赤ちゃんがいるから、静かに歌ってもいいですか？」と言って、ウクレレのケーブルを抜きマイクから離れて歌いだした。歌声がそっと近くなる。ライブ会場だけでなく、店の外の風景までスローモーションのようにゆっくりと動いている。すべてが彼女の歌声に包まれているように。赤ん坊は穏やかな表情でリタを見ている。幸福というものが手にとってわかるような時間。
　目を瞑ると、よく晴れた日に木陰に入ったような感覚に陥る。瞼の裏に光の粒がチラチラと踊る、あの感じ。
　彼女の歌には春を告げるような歓びがある。寒い冬を終えて春の訪れを祝うような、村の祝祭。若い娘たちが花冠を被り、好意を寄せる青年を目で追いかける。子供たちが広場を駆け回る。
　閉ざされた厳しい冬から解放されて、生まれたばかりの息吹が世界に蠢く。また新しい生活が始まる。
　
　昔ほど思うように旅に出ることができなくなった。だから、旅への憧憬は年々強くなっている。行ったことのない国に降り立ちたい。はじめての空気を肌に擦り込み、その国特有の香り、味、温度を堪能したい。そうだ、人とも話したいな。食堂やパブ、美術館や公園を散歩したり。渇望に近い願望は年々、わたしの中で膨らんでいく。
　けれども、彼女たちが去った今、わたしの願望は満たされている。リタとその家族が運んできてくれた風景と感覚。
　旅に出なくても、旅に出たような真新しいものに包まれた感触が確かにあった。彼女の故郷の春のような。厳しい冬を経た眩い春。
　新しい風景と春を運んで来てくれた彼女に、この本を送ろう。きっと喜んでくれる。

【本日の栄町市場】

「八百屋まえひら」は寡黙なお兄さんと陽気な弟さん、一見正反対にも見えるふたりが仲良く切り盛りしている。店にはいつでも色とりどりの野菜と果物が並ぶ。産地や鮮度、どれが美味しい？どんな質問にも大きな声で答えてくれる。
　キュウリを選んでレジに持って行くと、「こっちの方がいいですよ。さっき仕入れたばっかりだから」と、より新鮮なキュウリに取り替えてくれる。
　市場で買い物していて面白いのは、客の選ぶ商品がオススメできない物だと「あっちにしときなさい」とか「こっちがいいよ」とよりよい物を勧めてくれることだ。普通は古いものから売りたいと思うんじゃないかなぁ。でも、市場ではそうじゃないみたい。より新しいものを教えてくれるのだから有難い。売って終わりでなく、売ったあとのことまで気に掛けてくれる。意識しているわけではないのだろうけど、毎日のように顔を合わせる客にはよりよい物を提供したいと思ってくれている。
「八百屋まえひら」では焼き芋も人気だ。わたしもたまに買って食べるのだけど、甘くて本当に美味しい。「焼き芋ファン、多いですよね」とわたしが言うと、弟さんは毎回こう言う。
「焼き芋が一番褒められますね。その次は兄貴。俺は褒められない」
　黙々と働くお兄さんと接客が楽しい弟さん。わたしはふたりのバランス、とってもいいと思います。
